There are two things that differentiate community radio from public radio -- community access and volunteers. WTGP Christian Community Radio's volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization and our community. Volunteers participate in every aspect of WTGP operations and we could not do it without them!

WTGP volunteers are the heart of the station, providing professional skills, time, energy and personal commitment to all facets of our community radio operations.
The InfoTech Committee maintains WTGP's technical infrastructure, including it's website, live audio streams, audio archives, network, servers, and custom applications. The committee is assisted by the Operations Director and a paid systems administrator. The committee meets every 1-2 months, as needed, with e-mail communications and project updates between meetings.
Time Commitment: No specific time commitment, other than Monday evening meetings every 1 to 2 months. The work is project-based and different projects require different skills and time commitments.

Bylaws Review Committee
The Bylaws Review Committee is an ad hoc committee of the board or directors, whose charter is: To review bylaws ratified in 2013, to bring revised draft bylaws to the board for consideration and vote, to codify successful operating procedures and to keep the language of the bylaws plain and simple.
Time Commitment: Varies, but includes a 90 minute monthly meeting on the last Monday of the month from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at the Boulder Studios. You must be committed to attending the meetings, (no drop-ins please) and be available to read materials and participate in email discussions at your convenience between meetings.
Skills Needed: Bylaws committee members are thoughtful, logical people who love wordsmithing, analysis, editing and developing creative solutions. We are using GMail for between-meeting correspondence and document-viewing, so you need to be able to access the Internet and that site in particular.

The Development Committee is responsible for raising funds for the station. It oversees most general fundraising at WTGP, including the 99.9 capital campaign, major gifts, select special events, grants and underwriting.
Time Commitment: The committee usually meets on the 4th Friday of each month at 12:15 p.m. at the Denver studio. Members need to be able to attend most meetings and follow up on assignments that they take on. Assignments can be fulfilled on each person's schedule.
Skills Needed: Experience in or willingness to learn fundraising skills.

Training To Be On The Air
To be on considered for an on air position or host, first you need to attend a Volunteer Orientation and a Basic Training class. The schedule varies; e-mail Pete or Donnie to sign up. Then you must work on raising your skill level You practice on your own, at your own pace, in the studios, until you are comfortable operating the equipment. Next, you schedule and take a Finishing Touches class. Contact either the News Department or the Music Department for more information. Finally, ask the News Directors for a task, or ask the Music Director to do a Restless Mornings slot.
Notes: Classes are not held every week. They are scheduled on an as-needed basis. The cost is $50, payable to WTGP before the first class. Scholarships are available (restrictions apply). If you want more information on any of this, please contact Donnie.
Includes connecting with new volunteers who have expressed interest in news when they attend a new volunteer orientation and when they emerge from the basic board training class, helping the new volunteer find his or her way at WTGP, and checking with the volunteer from time to time. It also includes assisting the Co-Directors to organize training sessions in specific aspects of radio news production and tape parties, where volunteers listen to each other's work and offer feedback. Another aspect of volunteer development is finding ways to recognize the efforts and the achievements of News volunteers.
Includes helping with the production of recorded announcements of specific upcoming programs, developing and enhancing the description of programs on 99fm.org, including fuller descriptions of programs as well as supplementary text and visuals, and placing brief text announcements of upcoming programs for live reads by news hosts and DJ's.

Station Administration Opportunities
Front Desk/Reception Area
WTGP has two four-hour shifts available for volunteers at the front desk, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. This task includes answering the telephone and taking messages when necessary; greeting guests and directing them to the proper staff member; tidying the desk and kitchen area as needed; as well as small clerical tasks, such as filing, data entry, etc. that are delegated by staff members.
Time Commitment: One four-hour shift
Skills needed: Polite phone skills is the only skill necessary for this opportunity.
WTGP does approximately ten large mailings annually and volunteers are needed to assist with sorting, stuffing and sealing envelopes to prepare them for mailing. We generally have about one week notice for these projects.
Time Commitment: Hours are flexible; volunteers may offer as many hours as they are available.
Pledge Drive Phone Operators
WTGP conducts two 11-day pledge drives (usually in October and March) and one five-day mini drive every July. During these drives, phone operators are needed for a variety of shifts between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. daily. Shifts are approximately three hours long and the schedules are posted one month prior to the drives.

Data Entry for WTGP Calendars
We need help for a few hours each month doing computer data entry to keep our online calendars (concerts, event and arts) current.

Outreach and Special Events Volunteer Opportunities
Sequatchie Valley Day Bluegrass Music Jam
WTGP hosts a one-day music event in Pikeville on the third Sunday of July annually. This event offers a lot of volunteer opportunities, including set-up, break-down and clean-up, traffic assistance, beer serving, food grilling and serving, outreach, ticket sales, promotion, donation solicitation, dessert baking, poster art and volunteer coordination.

WTGP needs help throughout the year doing outreach at special events. This is where we set up a table of WTGP material and talk to people about WTGP, encouraging them to listen, become members or volunteers. Special events range from lectures to concerts and all sorts of things in between.
Time Commitment: Few hours plus. Varies by event
Skills Needed: A desire to talk to people and a love of WTGP. Experience in promotion and marketing and/or ability to organize an event are an additional plus.
Tabling Outreach Volunteer
WTGP is always in need of volunteers to staff our outreach tables at various public events in the metro area. Doing outreach is a special and important undertaking because even though we have been on the air for over thirty years, there are many people who are unfamiliar with WTGP, its content and how a volunteer powered radio station works. Outreach volunteers must take a knowledgeable and assertive approach to get the public's attention and engage and inform them about WTGP. Therefore, we need our tabling outreach volunteers to be gregarious, friendly, energetic, and engaging to a wide variety of people. They must also be prepared to take initiative and committed to WTGP's mission and ready to talk about it and their personal connection to it.
Responsibilities: We need volunteers who will set-up outreach materials, staff a table for the duration of the event, and then break down the table materials, sometimes by themselves. Summer tabling sometimes involves setting up and taking down a table and tent. We usually need volunteers to pick up and drop off materials at the station before and after the event, as well, and volunteers who can take the lead and handle tabling events from start to finish on their own are particularly helpful to the station. While staffing the table, volunteers must chat with event attendees, often initiating contact. Volunteers must be prepared to handle money for WTGP promotional materials sales (t-shirts, tote bags, mugs, etc.), invite listeners to become members (or renew their membership), and complete membership forms. Volunteers sometimes take entries for raffles or door prizes and distribute said prizes. The table and surrounding area should be neat, attractively set up, welcoming, and not cluttered with non-WTGP materials. Volunteers must follow all venue rules and regulations as set out by our hosts. Tabling happens most often during events on weekends, but can sometimes occur on weeknights at concerts and other similar events.
Requirements: Tabling outreach volunteers should be friendly and outgoing, promote WTGP positively and accurately, be clean and neat in appearance, physically able to do the tasks involved with the tasks they've agreed to be responsible for, and able to be trusted with cash, checks, and credit card numbers. They must have completed the WTGP orientation, be knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the station, familiar with contents of the materials they distribute (usually the radio magazines and the pocket guides), our programs and schedule, and mission statement.
Requested Skills: It is particularly helpful to have volunteers who are familiar with KGNU be available to do outreach at various political, community based and musical events. We also always need volunteers who are bilingual, particularly Spanish speakers, but volunteers who speak other languages are very helpful in our community outreach as well.

Headline News Readers (weekday mornings)
Volunteers must be at the station between 6:30 and 6:45 a.m. They will participate in reviewing possible news stories with the news directors and then will write a headline for the morning newscast that they will read live at 8:04 a.m. The newscast is done by 8:15 a.m. Training will be given on writing for radio and the news directors will work with the writers on editing the story in advance of the news cast.
AM News Hosts (weekday mornings 5:20 a.m.-8:15 a.m.)
Volunteers must complete the radio training class to be eligible for this. Additional training will be given by the news department. Hosts come to the studio by 5:20 a.m. to prepare for anchoring the morning news shows. Hosts will review the program log to see which underwriting spots and announcements and shows will be played that morning. Hosts will review the weather forecast to be read regularly during the morning, between shows. Hosts are responsible for doing station IDs, weather and time breaks and introducing the shows starting at 5:29 a.m. and then playing all of the news shows from 5:29-8:01 a.m. During this time they will also work with the news directors and other news readers in writing headlines to be read in the morning news cast at 8:04 a.m. Shift ends at 8:15 a.m., although occasionally hosts are asked to stay until 9:30 a.m. to help with additional engineering or answering phones for a call in show.
PM News Hosts (weekday afternoons: 3:00-6:00 or 7:00 p.m., depending on the day)
Volunteers must complete the radio training class to be eligible for this. Additional training will be given by the news department. Hosts come to the studio by 3:00 p.m. to help answer phones for the Metro show that airs 3-3:30 p.m. During this time, host will review the program log to determine which underwriting and announcements must air that afternoon and line up the shows to be played. Host does voice breaks (time, station ID's, weather, other announcements) from 3:30-6:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. between shows.
Sunday Afternoon Hosts (Sunday afternoons: 12:00-4:00 p.m and 4:00-7:00 p.m.)
Volunteers must complete the radio training class to be eligible for this. Additional training will be given by the news department. Hosts must get to the studio in advance of their shift to review the program log to determine which underwriting and announcements must air that afternoon and line up the shows to be played. Host does voice breaks (time, station ID's, weather, other announcements) between shows.
Dot Org Producers
Volunteers must complete the radio training class to be eligible for this. Additional training will be given by the news department. Producers will coordinate with Matthew, the Executive Producer of the Dot Org segment, to arrange interviews with local non-profits and then record the interviews and edit them into the appropriate format.
Volunteers must complete the radio training class to be eligible for this. Additional training will be given by the news department. Producers will coordinate with the news directors on stories in the community that need to be covered. We encourage producers to pitch story ideas to the news department as well as taking on given assignments. Once training has been completed, producers can check out recording equipment from the news department to go on assignment to record interviews and cover events. Producers will liaise with the news director on editing the features and interviews to be aired during the morning magazine or other shows. Producers are needed for general news assignments as well as specialty shows like Visit Tennessee Outdoors (WTGPs Around Tennessee show).
